Bhavish when he started Ola in 2010

Bhavish Aggarwal, the Co-Founder & CEO of India’s most popular cab aggregator Ola,
started his journey just like any other freshman at the Convocation Hall of IIT Bombay in
2004. 14 years from then, he will be coming back to IIT Bombay, but this time he will be on
the other side of same Convocation hall at the Entrepreneurship Summit 2018. Here’s a
snapshot of Bhavish’s amazing entrepreneurial journey.
Bhavish was born to middle class doctor parents in the town of Ludhiana. Like many young
boys from India’s aspiring middle class, Bhavish chose to work towards making it to the IITs
and he did! Soon after completing his B. Tech (Computer Science and Engineering) from IIT
Bombay in 2008, he started his career with Microsoft Research India as an Assistant
Researcher. While at Microsoft, Bhavish started his blog desitech.in which was all about
hosting content focused on technologies inclined towards the Indian scenario.
After quitting Microsoft, Bhavish started an online company which sold short tour & holiday
packages. While at it, he had a lasting bad experience where one of the cab drivers
abandoned him en-route his destination. A lot of customers had fallen prey to such
situations and were desperately in need of a quality cab service. This was when the idea of
starting up with a quality cab service came to his mind. Soon the online company was
rebranded to a startup called Ola Cabs, which is now known as Ola.
In 2010, along with his Co-Founder Ankit Bhati, also an alumnus of IIT Bombay Dual Degree
Batch of 2010, they started Ola out of a 1-BHK in Mumbai which served as an office
workspace for the drivers during the day and the founders at night. As of 2017, the
company has expanded to a network of more than 1 million driver partners across 110 cities
to be the most popular mobility platform in the country.
Ola is synonymous with transportation in India today and is a household name. Ola’s
innovations for the Indian market and its skyrocketing growth as one of the world’s leading
ridesharing companies have put India on the global startup map. We take immense pride that
this entrepreneurial zeal and passion has its roots in our institution!

with the pride of IIT-B live, during the grand keynote session at IIT Bombay’
